I found a job that feeds the creative in me

Do you enjoy your job?

I work in steel stamping prototype as a laser operator. I take mostly steel [and occasionally aluminum] parts, load them onto my laser, and cut them into shape. Since the new year, I’ve been learning how to program those lasers to cut the parts into shape. Do you know how cool that is?

You might have guessed from the collection of short stories, that I am a creative sort. My job feeds that creativity when I can’t be writing. I also have a very abstract mind. These parts come through and remind me of a variety of things.

There are my Johnny-5’s. They remind me of that cute little robot on Short Circuit. I’ve also got butterflies and cows. There are parts that remind me of a cartoon guy who I can’t quite remember. They come through and make me smile. Plus being prototype, there is always something new coming through.

Add in the fact that I am a philomath [a lover of learning] starting a new career in my 40s. I’m using math to cut metal. How awesome is that?

With all of that being said, I would quit my job in a heartbeat if I could make a living writing stories and books.
